The Complete Golf Towel Guide: Stay Dry, Clean, and Ready
From cleaning clubfaces to drying grips, the right towel can be the most underrated piece of golf equipment in your bag. Learn how to choose and use the perfect golf towel for every round.
Shop Golf TowelsPro Tip: Professional golfers always have a towel handy—often two. One for cleaning clubs and balls, another for hands and face. A quality towel maintains consistency and confidence from the first tee to the 18th green.
Why a Golf Towel Is Essential
Dirt, grass, and moisture on clubfaces can dramatically affect spin and ball flight. A clean clubface promotes pure contact, while a dry grip ensures control. Wiping sweat from your hands between shots is just as important as a quality pair of golf gloves. Attach your towel to your golf bag for quick access—every second saved means more focus on your next shot. Whether you’re playing in morning dew or a sudden shower, a high‑absorbency towel works alongside your golf umbrella to keep equipment dry. After the round, a damp towel cleans clubfaces before you store them, protecting your headcovers from grit and your iron covers from mud.
Key Features to Evaluate
Material
Microfiber, cotton, or waffle weave affect absorbency, durability, and softness. Microfiber is ideal for cleaning, while cotton offers a plush feel.
Size
Standard towels (16"x24") suit most, while larger caddy towels (20"x40") give full club wipe-downs. Compact tri‑fold towels save bag space.
Attachment
Carabiner clips, grommets, or magnetic closures let you hang the towel on your golf bag or belt loop. Choose a secure, easy‑access design.
Absorbency
Quick‑dry properties prevent mildew. Waffle or honeycomb textures enhance water absorption while resisting stains.
Types of Golf Towels
From basic cotton to advanced microfiber blends, the variety can be overwhelming. Here’s a breakdown of the most popular options on the market.
Microfiber Towels ($10–$25): Ultra‑absorbent and lint‑free, perfect for cleaning clubs and golf balls. They dry quickly and are machine‑washable. Most come with carabiner clips, making them a staple in any golf gear collection.
Waffle Weave Towels ($15–$30): The textured surface lifts dirt from club grooves with minimal effort, often preferred by tour pros. Pair one with your divot repair tools for a tidy green routine.
Tri‑Fold & Caddy Towels ($12–$35): Designed with a wet section for cleaning and a dry section for wiping. Some include a magnetic slot for quick access to your ball markers during play.
Personalized & Gift Towels ($20+): Custom embroidery with names, logos, or funny slogans. A personalized golf towel makes a thoughtful golf gift for any occasion.
How to Care for Your Golf Towel
Proper maintenance extends life: wash separately with mild detergent, avoid fabric softener (it reduces absorbency), and air‑dry or tumble on low. A clean towel not only performs better but also prevents transferring dirt to your golf apparel or car interior after the round.
Consider carrying two towels—one for clubs and one for hands. When you’re caught in a downpour, a high‑quality towel is just as vital as your rain jacket for maintaining a comfortable grip. A small microfiber towel clipped to your belt loop keeps your hands dry before every putt.
Invest in a towel that matches your playing style. Whether you prefer a simple clip‑on or a feature‑packed tri‑fold, the right towel can be the silent hero of your golf equipment arsenal.
