Book a Tee Time →A World‑Class Public Practice Facility
Perched on the coastal bluffs of La Jolla, the Torrey Pines driving range is one of the most scenic practice venues in the country. It’s open to everyone – no membership, no resident card required. Just pull up, grab a bucket, and swing with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. Whether you’re warming up before a round on the Torrey Pines North or South Course or simply dedicating an afternoon to improving your game, this range delivers championship‑level amenities that match its stunning setting.
Facilities & Layout
The range features a two‑tiered hitting area with both grass and mat stations. The upper deck offers sweeping ocean views, while the lower level sits closer to the landing area – ideal for dialing in distances. Grass tees are available daily (weather permitting) and are rotated regularly to keep the turf in excellent shape. A dedicated short‑game zone includes a large putting green, a chipping green with a practice bunker, and multiple target flags from 30 to 100 yards.
Lights allow practice until 9 p.m., making it one of the best evening practice spots in San Diego. After sunset, the lit bays create a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere perfect for working through your bag.

How to Make the Most of Your Practice
A great session starts with a plan. Instead of mindlessly beating balls, structure your time for maximum improvement.
- Begin with a dynamic warm‑up. Loosen your hips, shoulders, and back with a pre‑round warm‑up routine that primes your body for the full swing.
- Use alignment sticks. Placing an alignment stick on the ground reinforces proper aim and swing path – one of the simplest, most effective training aids you can buy.
- Set specific goals. Spend 15 minutes on wedges, then move through your mid‑irons and woods. Track your dispersion with a personal launch monitor to get instant feedback on carry distance and ball speed.
- Film your swing. A quick smartphone video from down‑the‑line and face‑on helps you spot flaws that you’d never feel. Cross‑check your positions against proven swing fundamentals.
- Finish with short game. Dedicate the last third of your session to chipping, pitching, and bunker shots. Torrey’s short‑game area is first‑rate – use it.
Essential Gear for the Range
Having the right tools makes a noticeable difference. Here’s what to bring for a comfortable, efficient practice session:
- Comfortable golf shoes – you’ll spend hours on your feet, so stability and cushioning are key.
- A quality glove – reduces friction and helps maintain a consistent grip pressure.
- Your own clubs – rental sets are fine for one‑off visits, but practicing with the clubs you play builds trust.
- High‑visibility golf balls – if you bring a shag bag for the short‑game area, consider using practice golf balls to easily identify them.
- A water bottle & sunscreen – the coastal sun can be deceptive; stay hydrated and protected.
If you’re looking to track precise distances, a laser rangefinder comes in handy even on the range, letting you shoot the target flags and verify your carry distances.
From the Range to the Course
Once you’ve grooved your swing, put your work to the test on the two championship layouts just steps away. Both the Torrey Pines North and South Courses are championship courses that host PGA Tour events, yet remain fully public. The South Course – home of the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Opens – is a stern examination of every club in your bag, while the redesigned North Course offers spectacular ocean views with more forgiving fairways.
